Quantifying the enhancement of swimming performance through strength and conditioning / performance analysis interventions

   School of Health Sciences

Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

About the Project

Despite its global appeal, swimming has been slow to embrace microtechnology in competition. This has now changed and has opened the door for researchers to investigate new conditioning practices and challenge the way things have always been done. The Faculty of Health’s sport team is looking for 1 or 2 PhD students to investigate the links between new conditioning practices, changes in technique and how implementing technology affect overall swimming performance.

You should have an active interest in swimming and able to work well within a team environment. You must be excited about answering questions that can give coaches better guidelines to enhance their training prescription and are looking forward to  delivering research with a real impact.

Desired Skills

  • Applicants should have a strong First Class or Second Class Honours degree, Master-by-Research degree, or equivalent qualification. With study in either strength and conditioning, performance analysis, biomechanics or a related field of study.
  • Experience or interest in research and working within a sport science context
  • A background in competitive swimming (whether as an athlete or coach) and strength and conditioning would be helpful though not mandatory.
  • A high level of verbal and written English proficiency
  •  (https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/enrol/international/english/
  • And finally…. we’re always looking for innovative thinkers!
