About the Project

A position is available at the Queensland Quantum Optics Laboratory for an enthusiastic, talented, and highly motivated student to undertake a PhD in quantum biosensing.

Our laboratory takes the quantum technologies developed for kilometre-scale gravitational wave observatories and miniaturises them onto a silicon chip and into optical microscopes. We were the first to use quantum light in biological microscopes. We recently applied the technology to demonstrate absolute quantum advantage in bioimaging for the first time (Casacio, Nature, 2021), observing structures that would be invisible using conventional techniques. This opens up exciting new applications in biotechnology.

We are offering a PhD position to use quantum microscopy to studying cell activity, protein conformational changes and the motion of molecular motors at scales where they have never been observed before. Through these applications we aim to change the way precision biotechnology is done, with broad applications in energy, health and biosecurity.

Our laboratory is a positive environment, full of young people seeking to make a difference to both our understanding of the world around us and to future technologies. We have longstanding collaborations with partners including NASA and Lockheed Martin, seeking to take our research into applications.
