Radiation Detection Doctoral Network - Identifying Next Generation Scintillator-Based Detector Arrays for fast CT Imaging Systems
A 3-and-a-half year PhD position is available in in the Sussex Experimental Particle Physics Group.
We are currently accepting applications for an industrial collaborative PhD studentship as part of the Radiation Detection Doctoral Network (Radnet). Radnet is a new collaborative doctoral training programme carrying out research and training in radiation detection and applications. The network is run by a consortium of the Universities of Surrey, Sussex and Royal Holloway, in collaboration with our industrial partners National Physical Laboratory, Kromek, Hilger Crystals, Ultra Energy and Rapiscan Systems. The network is also supported by the South East Physics Network (SEPnet).
The Radnet doctoral training network brings together PhD researchers, academics and industrial scientists and engineers to focus on collaborative research projects which are directly applicable to industrial challenges.
The University of Sussex based project will involve working to identify next generation scintillator-based detector arrays for fast CT imaging systems, investigating scintillator performance and manufacturing processes, and developing systematic testing protocols. The study will include detailed computer (GEANT4) simulations of optical transport and radiation deposition processes in scintillator materials. The industrial partners for this project will be Rapiscan Systems and Hilger Crystals.
You will receive:
fully-funded tuition fees for 3 and a half years (at the UK/EU rate)
a tax free bursary for living costs for 3 and a half years. For 2018/19 this is £14,777 per year.
a research training support grant for 3 and a half years of £1,650 per year.
You may also supplement your income with paid teaching (with your supervisor’s agreement).
