About the Project

Additive manufacturing (3D Printing) is an exciting technology that is forging ahead on many research frontiers such materials, applications, and the process technology. At the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Canterbury we have established a modern 3D facility that is well equipped with printers and 3D scanning equipment. There are a number of research topics that can be explored and this proposal relates to developing high speed to ultra high speed additive manufacturing equipment. Although additive manufacture is making inroads to many applications from domestic to space use, the technology will be limited for high volume manufacture unless quality parts can be made at high speed and with competitive part cost.

The project will entail researching current technologies, conceptualisation of possible solutions, designing, prototyping, testing and developing a machine. Candidates must be able to demonstrate self motivation, design competence, practical workshop ability and experience with prototyping mechanical equipment.

An undergraduate final year GPA > 7/9 or equivalent is required.
