About the Project

This post is for a graduate researcher and doctoral degree candidate who will be nested with others across academic departments in a programme of work.

The focus: Healthcare educational tools for better professional interpersonal relationships in the context of social diversity.

We anticipate this doctoral research will consist of four phases:

1. A literature review to identify cultural, linguistic, socio-economic and psychological differences towards accessing and receiving interpersonal healthcare services

2. Exploratory research study, to identify how different cultural groups in Ireland (e.g. a range of case studies from African, Asian, East European and patients from the Travelling Community and other minority groups) access healthcare and identify any staff issues that reflect a lack of preparedness for working with patients from a diverse background and from different cultures.

3. We anticipate that following phase two, the student will develop a focused intervention targeted at medical students to support better understanding and communication with patients from different cultures and language groups.

4. The final anticipated phase of this Ph.D. would be to evaluate the intervention

The aim is to improve RCSI educational offerings to healthcare students across the world to work well in very diverse multicultural relationships with patients. Themes of power, language skills, human intimacy and coping with suffering may arise.

The research candidate should have a good primary degree in a healthcare field, education, psychology, or sociology. They should have a knowledge and interest in health care, and in third-level education.

A high level of literacy and numeracy is required. Some experience in scientific writing, in conducting a literature review, and in conducting research is needed.
