About the Project

Realisation of a metrological characteristics approach to calibration of X-ray computed tomography

X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is now considered a viable tool for performing non-destructive-testing and dimensional measurements. XCT provides various advantages compared to other types of coordinate measuring machines (CMSs): particularly a high measurement point density and the only CMS capable of non-destructively determining both the external and internal geometries of an object, as well as distinguish between different materials. However, XCT measurements are limited by difficulties in uncertainty determination, most notably because of a relatively poor understanding of many of XCT’s plethora of measurement error sources.

In this project, the determination of XCT measurement uncertainty using the metrological characteristics approach is proposed. This approach is based on understanding basic characteristics of an instrument that can be determined with relative ease. These characteristics encapsulate the multitude of influence quantities that contribute to XCT measurement uncertainty and are then used to form the standard uncertainty terms in a given measurement model for a specific task.

The preferred start date for this project is 1st October 2022 but this is negotiable.
