About the Project

This PhD is an opportunity to join the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST) at Loughborough University. Established in 1993, CREST has graduated dozens of PhD and hundreds of MSc students in low-carbon technologies including solar photovoltaics (PV), wind power and the integration of these into electrical power systems.

As wind and solar PV become the dominant forms of generation in decarbonising power systems around the globe, conventional energy trading, based on a fixed price per kilowatt-hour, becomes increasingly problematic. The value of energy storage is hard to quantify, and demand-side flexibility is poorly renumerated in existing markets. This PhD will identify and investigate alternate market structures that can appropriately charge consumers according to the timing of their consumption and fairly remunerate generators and storage, so as to promote efficient investment in and operation of reliable low-carbon power systems.
