Reducing carbon footprint of off-grid renewable energy storage system by integrating second-life lithium-ion battery


Project Description

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Highly motivated candidates are invited to apply for a fully funded 3 year PhD position at WMG, the University of Warwick, UK. This is an exciting PhD opportunity for a student with a good electrical and electrochemical background, and interested in second-life application of lithium-ion battery.

The aim of the project is to investigate reduction of carbon footprint of off-grid renewable energy storage system by integrating second-life lithium-ion battery. The PhD will exclusively investigate lifecycle of second-life lithium-ion battery from application to recycling, and compare with conventional lead-acid based energy storage systems. A wide range of analytical methods and equipment such as battery cycling equipment, EIS, SEM, XRD will be available to the project to use. Full training will be provided were applicable.

You will be hosted within a dynamic research group, where post-doctoral researchers and doctoral students collaborate in the research area ranging from novel battery chemistry to testing and characterisation of battery cells to systems, battery modelling, and second life application and all the way to recycling of lithium-ion battery. By joining this research group you will have access to the Energy Innovation Centre (EIC), one of the world leading research facility in energy storage. By joining the research group, you will have be well situated to learn new synthesis skills, access to excellent facilities for polymer synthesis and characterisation, as well as communicate with excellent polymer researchers in the groups. You will also have the opportunity to work and interact with the industry sponsor.


DESIRED STUDENT BACKGROUND

The ideal candidate will:

-Hold (or expect to hold) a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc / BSc or equivalent degree in Electrical, electrochemical or chemical engineering
-Understand and have experience in energy storage system operation, in particular testing and characterisation
-Have experience of working with off-grid renewable energy storage system, preferably the energy storage systems employed
-Have a passion and motivation to challenge the state of the art in an exciting new technology application space


FUNDING & ELIGIBILITY

Funding is available for UK/EU or International applicants for 3 years.
