Emergency admission rates for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (Crohn’s and Colitis) have increased, despite improvements in management strategies such as biologics and increasing elective admission. Our previous work shows that poor pattern recognition and service integration contribute, and we propose alternative statistical and qualitative approaches to understand and mitigate the problem better. Between 2021 and 2024 Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is hosting a Health Foundation quality improvement exercise - ‘AWARE-IBD’, led by the charity Crohn’s and Colitis UK (CCUK). The candidate will be integrated into AWARE-IBD’s team to expand the scope of the improvements. Our hypothesis is that mixed-methods research and multidisciplinary partnership working approach can produce actionable knowledge capable of reducing emergency admissions. The candidate will use literature review, social science theory, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of routine data to identify prototypes of emergency admissions. They will work with clinicians, patients and a national charity to produce actionable knowledge with the potential to reduce emergency admissions.
