About This PhD Project

Project Description

The buildings we deliver healthcare in, and the environment in which healthcare delivery happens, contributes to preventing and controlling the risk of transmission of infection. These buildings need to be compliant with best available evidence in all aspects of safety, and with a system that is designed and built to be safe at the point of initiation of services, and for ongoing maintenance.
There is a need for evidence to support improved governance on the design, development, construction and commissioning of the building process as well as the ongoing use and maintenance of the building when occupied. Evidence is also needed to support the production and interpretation of standards and guidance for building processes in healthcare and the need for consistent and system level approaches across health services.
The importance of a clean and safe environment for healthcare should not be underestimated. For infections from the built environment (e.g. water, ventilation and drainage systems) to be reduced it is imperative that infection prevention measures are “designed-in” at the outset of the planning, design and construction stages of a healthcare facility.
The focus of this PhD should be on the evidence base of the research underpinning guidance and standards that assure the built environment is fit for purpose, in terms of creating safe systems for healthcare, and to cope with the future threats of resistant infections. The research needs to address the need for safe, effective, patient and staff centred buildings which are fit for purpose, cost effective and sustainable in the longer term.
This intradisciplinary studentship will be undertaken with the SHIP Research Group the BEAM Research Centre and can be approached in many different ways. Candidates are to submit a research proposal (maximum 2000 words) documenting how they would approach this topic as part of the application.
