About the Project

This fully funded PhD studentship is offered under the University of Chester’s Sustainable Futures programme, supported with external funding from CreatureKind. The successful candidate will complete a doctoral research project focussed on an agreed topic that engages religious perspectives on the human use of non-human animals for food, under the supervision of Professor David Clough.

The holder of the studentship will join a lively Department of Theology and Religious Studies committed to excellence in research and teaching. The TRS Department at Chester has experts in a range of approaches to the study of religion and theology, with a particular strength in religious

studies and theology that focuses on the empirical study of religion, faith, belief and spirituality as it is lived and practised in the contemporary world.

The Department currently has approximately 80 undergraduate students, 50 MA students and 60 doctoral students. In addition, the Department works with a number of collaborative partnerships to validate degree programmes. The Department has an active postgraduate student body, with opportunities to meet regularly for postgraduate training events, symposia and research seminars featuring visiting academics.

CreatureKind is US non-profit organization working to encourage Christians to recognize faith-based reasons for caring about the wellbeing of fellow animal creatures used for food, and to take practical action in response (http://becreaturekind.org).
