Project Description

PhD Studentship in Radar Imaging

Cranfield University – Cranfield Defence and Security
Remote Intelligence of Building Interiors Using Radar

Applications are invited for a 3-year fully-funded PhD studentship to begin in October.

The research will develop and de-risk low frequency radar image collection and processing techniques for sensing the interiors of buildings; to determine their internal structures, and to detect the presence of equipment and human activity. Radar techniques have previously been developed for monitoring and surveillance of building interiors, but these are applicable only when in close proximity or in contact with the structure. This project will instead look at development of new capabilities for the Remote Intelligence of Building Interiors project, using stand-off platforms. The study will be based around experimental laboratory measurements to be conducted with Cranfield’s Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar (GB-SAR) Microwave Measurement Facility and an airborne dataset. A significant proportion of the research will involve the development and validation of signal and image processing schemes. Students will work closely with our UK and international partners.

Entry Requirements
Candidates should hold a first/upper-second class degree or a masters (MSc/MRes) in an applied physics/ engineering/ mathematics related subject. The PhD is aimed at UK/EU students. Good interpersonal and communication (oral and written in English) skills are required, as is an ability to work independently.

Students will be based at Cranfield’s Shrivenham Campus in Oxfordshire within the School of Cranfield Defence and Security.

How to apply
A CV and the names and addresses of two referees should be sent to Dr D Andre at [Email Address Removed] who is also available by email for informal discussion.
The closing date is August 12th.
