Contaminated concrete needs to be removed from end of life concrete structures in nuclear facilities prior to final decommissioning and demolition. Novel solutions or improvements to existing processes to the decommission of such structures are in urgent need.
Extensive research has been conducted by the supervisor on the fire-induced explosive spalling of concrete. Instead of preventing it in most cases, fire spalling could offer an opportunity to the removal of concrete for the purpose noted above.
This project aims to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of this approach and to understand its underlying mechanisms.
