Project Description

Genomics, the analysis of large sections of an individual’s DNA, is beginning to deliver on the promise of personalised healthcare that was a driving factor in the Human Genome Project. In the UK, the 100,000 Genomes project has already provided insights into the genetic mutations underlying the illness experienced by various individuals allowing them, and their relatives, to undertake interventions to slow or avoid the manifestations of the mutations in their lives. Few members of the public will read the relevant research articles and their ability to distinguish the hope from the hype will largely be mediated by popular media, including television and radio programmes.

This project will exploit “Box of Broadcasts” an emerging online repository of TV and radio programmes to examine the ways in which genomic breakthroughs are being represented.
