Research Studentship in: Modelling and Manufacturing of alloy-alloy composites (Solid Mechanics and Materials Engineering, Computational Mechanics)

3.5-year D.Phil. studentship

Project: Modelling and Manufacturing of a new alloy

Supervisors: Dr Ed Tarleton & Prof Felix Hofmann

This project will focus on computational modelling of severe plastic deformation induced during the manufacturing of engineering alloys. The goal is to better understand evolution of the material structure and defect content. This is essential for tailoring deformation pathways to optimise mechanical properties.

The main focus of this project is on modelling and simulation, using the crystal plasticity finite element method. The student will first learn how the code we have developed works, before developing the code to simulate large strains (finite deformations). This will then be used to model specific metal forming processes such as HPT (high pressure torsion). In addition, there is scope for experimental work within the project to validate the model. In particular this will focus on using large deformation processing to form nano-scale alloy-alloy composites with superior mechanical properties.

Candidate Requirements

Prospective candidates will be judged according to how well they meet the following criteria:
• A first-class honours degree in Engineering, Physics or Materials Science
• Strong mathematical skills
• Excellent English written and spoken communication skills

The following skills are desirable but not essential:
• Ability to program in Matlab and Fortran
• Familiarity with FEM and Abaqus
• Enthusiasm for experimental work

Funding Notes

This studentship is funded through the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Doctoral Training Partnership and is open to both UK students (full award – fees plus stipend) and EU students (partial award – fees only). Full details of the EPSRC eligibility requirements can be found here.

Award Value
Course fees are covered at the level set for UK/EU students (c. £7970 p.a.). The stipend (tax-free maintenance grant) is c. £15009 p.a. for the first year, and at least this amount for a further two and a half years.
