Project Description

Cyber-physical systems (CPS), integrating computation, networking, and physical processes, have wide applications in the automotive, robotics, avionics, and smart grid. While the functions of CPS have been increasing in both complexity and number, the resources on the embedded implementation platforms are often limited. Conventionally, embedded control algorithms are designed using model-based approaches without considering the implementation details, such as the computer architecture and operating system. Large safety margins are commonly deployed. Such a separate design paradigm is too conservative in resource dimensioning and utilization.

While there have recently been some pioneer efforts, significantly more are needed to fully close the gap between the cyber components and the physical dynamics. This project aims to develop new CPS-oriented techniques that synergistically integrate the characteristics of hardware/software implementation resources into control algorithms design, in order to achieve high control performance and resource efficiency simultaneously. These techniques are expected to be interdisciplinary, involving program analysis, controller design, scheduling theory and optimization algorithms.

Funding Notes

Applicants must meet the entrance requirements for a PhD in Computer Science, be eligible to pay home/EU fees and meet EPSRC funding eligibility requirements.

Successful candidates will be supported for three years. Funding includes:
£14,777 (2018/19 rate) per year stipend,
Home/EU tuition fees.
