About the Project

This 4-year PhD project at the University of Strathclyde and in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline is an excellent opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at the interface of pharmaceutical manufacturing and data science with the aim of accelerating the development of the next generation of medicines. The PhD Opportunity

The development of medicines using traditional approaches takes several years and is not only laborious and time consuming but also environmentally unfriendly: valuable solvents, materials and energy are consumed during extensive empirically driven product development trials. These traditional development approach result in a lack of responsiveness (e.g. shortages of drugs) and limits the ability to realise personalised medicines and medicines for small patient populations at sustainable costs. This project aims to de-risk and accelerate the development of pharmaceutical tablets by incorporating data science in the experimental planning and knowledge generation process. This project brings together a team from GlaxoSmithKline and the University of Strathclyde with expertise in digital medicine manufacturing, modelling, material science and AI. New smart experimental planning approaches that realise an iterative Design – Make & Test – Model & Learn development process will be delivered with the potential of reducing the experimental workload by more than 60% compared to traditional experimental design methods.

The PhD Training Opportunity at CMAC

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic research team based at the University of Strathclyde and working closely with GlaxoSmithKline and collaborators within the Continuous Manufacturing and Advanced Crystallisation Hub (CMAC), gain experience of a range of techniques as part of your research. This project is also supported through The Data Lab which will provide world-class training in data science.

Researchers working on CMAC projects have a great opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in world class facilities, explore academic and industrial collaborations, experience working in industry through placements, and receive multidisciplinary training and mentoring that will help them develop into well-rounded professionals. The structure of a PhD project with CMAC includes a period of initial training and familiarisation with the Hub’s activities, participation in summer schools, outreach events, mentoring schemes, and supervision from academic and industrial advisers.

Information on Application Process

To apply for this project, you should have a background in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, pharmaceutical science, material science, mechanical engineering, or similar. You will need to have a passion for research, multidisciplinary collaboration, and collaboration with industrial stakeholders.

The offered studentship covers home tuition fees, research/training costs, and provides a stipend for 4 years. Candidates eligible for home fees are UK or Irish nationals, applicants with a settled or pre-settled status in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme, and applicants with indefinite leave to remain in the UK. We also welcome applications from EU or international candidates who can provide evidence of their ability to fund the fee difference.
