Project Description

Virtual heritage, interaction design and digital preservation are active and important areas of research with many opportunities for innovation. This project will provide an opportunity to pursue world-class virtual heritage research, provide experience of formal design and evaluation processes and an opportunity for substantial contribution to international publication in leading journals/fora proceedings.

The PhD research will involve the development of a responsive website integrated with collaborative and reconstruction tools, and a statistical analysis of performance in use.

Research Context: This PhD project will progress the work of the Virtual Cuneiform Tablet Reconstruction (VCTR) Project - an international collaboration inspired by the ambition to support virtual access to cuneiform artefacts and to reconstruct cuneiform tablets by joining virtual fragments together. Information about the VCTR project and prior publications can be found at The research will be supervised by Dr Sandra Woolley in the Centre for Computer Science Research at Keele University. It will be co-supervised by Dr Tim Collins at Manchester Metropolitan University and will involve collaboration with VCTR project partners.

Open to fully self-funded students only.
Please note that self-funded applicants must provide funding for both tuition fees and living expenses for the 3 year duration of the research. There is a future possibility of competitive scholarship awards for outstanding applicants (1st class honours), however, none are currently available.

Eligibility Criteria: Applications are welcomed from science, technology, engineering or mathematics graduates with (or anticipating) at least a 2.1 honours degree or equivalent. Applicants will require good computing skills, ideally with web development, signal processing and 3D graphics programming experience (e.g., 3JS or WebGL). Applicants should have an enthusiasm for system design and an interest in evaluation and statistical analysis. They should be self-motivated and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
The opportunities are open to UK/EU students and overseas students. The collaborative and presentation aspects of the research require very good English language and communication skills. Overseas applicants would therefore require an English IELTS (or equivalent) of 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in any subtest.
