About the Project
This project focusses on the retrieval of the height of volcanic ash plumes, using satellite imagery analysed to reveal the presence of ash (e.g. SEVIRII or MODIS) and back trajectory analysis to retrieve the altitude of volcanic ash. The altitude constraint would facilitate improved forecasts of the dispersion of volcanic ash. The project would involve rigorous testing of performance across a wide range of previously observed eruptions.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in Physics or Geoscience, be familiar with one or more of radiative transfer, spectroscopy, meteorology, and have the ability to program in Python.
Funding for this project is available through competition for Home students, through a Postgraduate Teaching Associate program, in which 60% of time will be dedicated to research and 40% to teaching over a five year total timescale. It is envisaged that the student will become a fellow of the Higher Education Authority. Applications from self-funded Home and Overseas students are welcome.
