About the Project

Role of oral anticoagulants on clinical outcomes in COVID-19 infection: Develop and implement new statistical approaches to evaluate potential relationships and practical implications.

Since coagulopathy is a common complication of COVID-19, oral anticoagulants (OAC) may play a direct role in COVID-19 pathology, and hence the association between COVID-19 and OAC is of key interest. However, this association appears complex and bi-directional, with increasing susceptibility to the COVID-19 infection or severity, while the mortality of severe COVID-19 is relatively high among people on OAC. Therefore, the specific role of OAC in disease management remains unclear, and the role of concurrent risk factors and variation to medication management need to be considered at individual-level to estimate true impact of OAC on clinical outcomes, and further, to validate the application of anticoagulant in COVID-19.

The project is aimed to (1) Identify the dependence structure between OAC and survival in patients with COVID-19, (2) Compare the adjusted mortality between people on OAC and people not on OACs, (3) Evaluate insights for consideration of OAC in the management of patients with COVID-19, and (4) Disseminate and communicate the findings in most effective manner.

It is expected the successful applicant (s) must commence on or before 1st February 2021.

Funding Notes

The studentships will be for 4 years full-time (subject to satisfactory progress) and will cover the cost of tuition fees at Home/EU rates. A stipend in line with the UK Research Council is payable at £15285 per annum, and an additional allowance of up to £1000 per year will be paid for approved research costs. Please note that funding is only available for the first 3 years but a 4th year is unfunded for writing up. Due to funding restrictions, the studentships are open to Home/EU applicants only.
