About the Project

In this project, we will probe the role of the energy sensing protein kinase, PAS-domain protein kinase (PASK) in energy sensing in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH). Preliminary data from the lab indicate that loss of PASK exhibit increased feeding behaviour and dysregulated glucose and fat metabolism, all parameters that are regulated by the VMH. Additionally, loss of PASK led to loss of the anorexic effect of the glucagon-like peptide mimetics, a class of drugs that is currently used to treat diabetes and obesity. The objective of this PhD will be investigate whether PASK regulates any of these physiological functions via its action in the VMH. Thus, this work sits at the interface between metabolism and neuroscience. The work will be conducted at the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research, in collaboration with researchers across various institutes at the University of Birmingham, who will bring a wide range of expertise to the project. During the PhD, the successful candidate will also be participating in cohort activities such as journal clubs and departmental seminars to enhance their training.
