Project Description

The purpose of this Human Computer Interaction PhD project is to improve the safety of workers in high risk environments by examining how Audio Based AR can be used to supplement activities in the workplace. Over 500,000 injuries are sustained in the workplace each year; 31% of all fatal accidents and 14% of non-fatal accidents are due to individuals being struck by moving vehicles or objects. This type of accident is most likely to occur in high risk environments where sound location is limited. The development of methods to enhance safety support in these environments will make a major contribution to workplace safety. This project has three (specific) aims:

1. To establish the challenges that exist when working in high risk environments, and the potential for enhanced sound localisation to reduce these risks
2. To develop a system capable of giving workers in high risk environments enhanced auditory cues enabling for a greater understanding of risk location
3. To discover if the created system can be used successfully to give workers a greater understanding of risk location and improve overall safety.

The outcomes of this PhD have the potential to be used within industry and will produce a major contribution to reducing the number of injuries that are sustained in the workplace each year.

Interested applicant should send an email to Dr Crabb with a CV and cover letter.
