The PhD candidate will undertake a specific project that will enrich and extend the primary research. The candidate will work closely with the research team and build on/augment the findings of the broader research. The PhD project may involve a focus on one of the four states or a comparative focus across the four states. It will involve examining the relationships between and impacts arising from school autonomy reform, accountability and social justice in relation to key aspects such as student learning outcomes, teacher professional identity and practice, school leadership and community/school relations.
This research is partially funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council. The project is situated within the broad political consensus in Australia and internationally that greater school autonomy within the context of increased school accountability will drive up academic standards and improve public education. The study will examine the barriers and enablers to enacting social justice within this policy climate. Through broad and in-depth methods of research across four Australian states (Vic, Qld, WA, NSW), the study will generate an evidence base and new knowledge to support social justice through school autonomy reform.
