About the Project

PhD Studentship in Cancer Epidemiology

Department of Surgery and Cancer

Imperial College London

St Mary’s Campus, Paddington, London, UK

Project title: Prevention and early diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancer

An opportunity has arisen for a 4-year PhD studentship within the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London funded by Cancer Research UK.

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of morbidity and premature mortality in the UK and internationally: estimated to be the fourth most common cancer and second most common cause of cancer death in the UK. Cancers of the stomach and oesophagus are less common in the UK than colorectal cancer but have very high fatality rates, which has led Cancer Research UK to prioritise research on these cancers. There is an urgent need to reduce the burden of gastrointestinal cancers by better understanding risk factors and improving screening and early detection. This research aims to investigate risk factors for oesophageal, stomach and colorectal cancer incidence, and/or investigate ways to optimise colorectal cancer screening and surveillance strategies.

Applicants must be UK/Ireland nationals or have permanent leave to remain in the UK and should hold (or obtain by Mar 2024) a first or upper‐second class honours degree or equivalent in a Life Sciences or health‐related discipline. A Master’s degree in epidemiology or a related field is desirable. Prior experience in cancer epidemiology is not essential but some experience would be preferred.

Funding: 48 months (full time), includes course fees at the Home/Ireland rates and a tax‐free stipend of £23,000.

Applicants should submit their CV and a covering letter, including full contact details of two referees, to Will Kay ([Email Address Removed]).

All Imperial College London PhD entry requirements must be met and the successful applicant will subsequently need to apply online.

We look forward to receiving applications from all candidates and will select those who display the potential to become world leading researchers of the future based on their application and performance at an interview. We are encouraging applications from candidates of Black and ethnic minority backgrounds as they are underrepresented at PhD level within our institution.

For further information about the research or queries about the application process please contact Will Kay ([Email Address Removed]). We regret that due to the large volume of applications received, we are only able to notify those shortlisted for interview.

The deadline for applications is: 23:59 Mar 1st 2024.
