Project Description

A PhD project with Professor Klapper will investigate factors influencing second language acquisition. Particular areas of interest are the effects of residence abroad versus classroom-based learning or the role of a focus on form in second language learning. Alternatively a project may involve some aspect of language pedagogy, with a particular area of interest being teaching methodologies, including for example task-based approaches to language learning. In all these areas there is scope for both quantitative and qualitative investigation, and research might encompass classroom-based studies. Typically projects will focus on the acquisition of European languages, but are not limited to these. For projects in which a specific language is the focus of analysis and thus good supervisory knowledge of that language is essential, it may be possible to arrange appropriate co-supervision within the Department of Modern Languages.
