Securing Internet of Things (IoT) for Enterprises

About the Project

The total number of connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices is expected to reach about 75.44 billion worldwide by 2025, indicating a five-fold increase in ten years. The exponential growth in the number of devices combined with the fact that security is often neglected by the manufacturers who are mostly focused on cost, size, and usability of these devices, has exacerbated the security risks involved with IoT systems. The call to make IoT more secure is increasingly pertinent, as 97% of organisations implementing IoT say that they are concerned about security. Automated approaches are required to keep up with the number of services and devices that must be vetted for vulnerabilities. Alternatively, innovative security architectures are required allowing detection of a system under attack and intensifying protection mechanisms. Moreover, realistic contextual variables will need to be considered for device communication, underlying infrastructure, and embedded software design and verification.

We are looking for an excellent, motivated, self-driven doctoral student to work in this exciting and emerging area. The student is expected to be passionate about system-type research and ambitious to carry out research with impact. The student will be a member of Security and PrivacY Research in IoT (SPYRIT) Lab and will be supported with access to state-of-the-art equipment facilities and infrastructure to conduct research.

Funding Notes

The Scholarship is provided by the CSCRC valued up to $50,000 per annum for Australian Citizens. A stipend of $37,000 per annum tax exempt for an international candidate. International candidates may be eligible for a CSCRC top-up of up to $13,000 per annum. International students will also be covered for the university tuition fees and compulsory health coverage for 4 years.

**Note: International applicants must be a citizen of the EU countries, UK, Canada, or the USA. This scholarship is not available for other international students in the current round. **


Other requirements:

• Have completed a Bachelor of degree with a 1st class Honours, or a Masters degree that contains a significant (and relevant) research component with equivalent academic performance in Computer Science or similar.
• Good programming skills are required (C++, Java, Python, or others).
• Knowledge about security, privacy, or IoT disciplines is preferable.
• Training and skills in machine learning are preferable.
• Meet Deakin's PhD entry requirements.
• Be enrolling full time and hold an honours degree (first class) or an equivalent standard master's degree with a substantial research component.
• Candidate will be eligible to receive a CSCRC scholarship only after the student has received an unconditional offer from Deakin University.
