Project Description

Ever since Helmholtz proposed that perception involves a form of unconscious inference, there has been a growing consensus that this inference is Bayesian in character. This consensus is supported by papers on visual-haptic cue integration, stereo-texture cue integration, audio-visual perception, sensory-motor adaptation, and motion perception. Accordingly, the related research questions to be addressed are as follows: What is the nature of the assumptions made by the human visual system in interpreting retinal images? In Bayesian terms, what is the exact form of prior probability density function for visual parameters, such as lighting direction? These questions are important because a complete answer will tell us why we see what we see. This PhD involves psychophysical experiments combined with computational modelling.

Requirements: We ask for a minimum of a first class or high upper second-class undergraduate honours degree and a distinction or high merit at Masters level in psychology or a related discipline.
