Project Description

3.5 years October 2020

Thermal desorption equipment is used in a variety of areas, such as environmental monitoring and security, where high availability is either essential or highly desirable – requiring relatively shorter lead time for consumables, wear and tear parts, and spares. The growth of Industry 4.0 technologies (including cyber-physical systems, the Internet of things, cloud computing and cognitive computing) allows the possibility of real-time monitoring systems that enable the instrumentation to become more intelligent – knowing exactly what’s happening in the equipment, interacting with the surroundings including other devices and humans if needed, and finally integrated within a broad “digital value chain”. Such embedded smart abilities will make the next generation products not just responsive to customer requirements - staying one step ahead so to inform new product development - but also resilient in coping with the uncertainty imposed by different applications.

In this proposed PhD study, research objectives focus primarily on three aspects. In the first place, it requires a service-oriented approach to understand the digital environment of future thermal desorption equipment so that data/information modelling for smart products can be carried out. Secondly, advanced data analytics concerning the identification of key product components and modelling of their failure mechanisms need to be researched so that corresponding machine learning-based algorithms can be developed. Lastly, research and design of a suitable IoT platform will be conducted so that the developed intelligent algorithms can be embedded and further optimized in IoT for the operational efficiency and sustainable performance.

Candidates should hold or expect to gain a first class degree or a good 2:1 (or their equivalent) in a relevant subject area.

Funding Notes

Tuition fees (home/EU rate) and an annual stipend equivalent to current Research Council rates (currently £15,285 for academic year 2020/21)

This studentship is open to Home or EU candidates. Overseas candidates may apply but must confirm that they are able pay the difference between home and overseas fees (approx. £15K pa) themselves.
