Project Description

It is a widely accepted view that where sex is not relevant, the exclusion of members belonging to a certain sex from participating in areas of social life amounts to unjust discrimination. Yet in sports, athletes’ sex (unlike other characteristics, such as race, sexual orientation or religion) is a key factor in determining their eligibility to participate in many competitions, regardless of their level of skill. Relatedly, it is clear that the opportunities for participating and thriving in different sports varies depending on the athlete’s sex. Additionally, the difficulties faced by current policies when considering intersex and transgender athletes suggest the need for greater clarity about what fair policies governing the distribution of opportunities (to train, compete, and participate) in sports might be.

Students will work with Dr Federico Luzzi on the research project Sex Equality and Sports. Doctoral theses supervised under this project will examine the following questions:

- Are sex-based restrictions in sports morally justified? If so, under what conditions?
- What is the fairest way of determining athletes’ eligibility and access to sporting opportunities?
- What characteristics should be taken into account when considering an athlete’s eligibility to take part in competitions?
- If sex or gender should be taken into account, which measures to determine an athlete’s sex or gender are appropriate and morally justifiable?
