About the Project

Summary:

Wound healing is a fundamental biological process essential for the maintenance of tissue integrity and overall health. However, the mechanisms underlying wound healing remain complex and multifaceted. This multidisciplinary PhD project uniquely combines principles from biology and mathematics to create advanced numerical models that illuminate the intricate dynamics of wound healing. This PhD project seeks to bridge the gap between biology and mathematics by developing advanced numerical models that simulate the intricate dynamics of wound healing.

Objectives:

1.    Modelling the healing process: Gain insights into the dynamic processes of inflammation, cell migration, proliferation, and tissue remodelling during wound healing.

2.    Predictive simulations: Develop predictive models that can anticipate the healing trajectory under various conditions, helping us better understand how different factors influence the process.

3.    Optimization and intervention: Use computational tools to explore strategies for optimizing wound healing and potential interventions to accelerate and enhance the process.

Methods:

We will use the lattice Boltzmann method to simulate reaction-diffusion processes within biological tissues during the wound healing journey. Our focus will be on understanding how cells behave within the tissue microenvironment. The lattice Boltzmann method, known for its exceptional accuracy and versatility, will be harnessed to create precise numerical models that shed light on the intricacies of interactions during tissue regeneration. This innovative approach will enable us to gain deeper insights into wound healing, offering potential avenues for optimizing and expediting the healing process.

The proposed start date is January 2024.

Eligibility

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s in a relevant science or engineering related discipline.
