The University of Exeter’s College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences is inviting applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship to commence in May 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The studentship will cover Home tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend of at least £15,609 for 3.5 years full-time, or pro rata for part-time study.

Project Description:
The clean offshore wind energy is gaining traction worldwide with a great development potential facing net zero target. UK is leading this thriving industry with the largest capacity installed. In early stages of development, the technical realisation is the core challenge. However, when more offshore wind farms with larger scale are in design and in operation, it comes the golden age to reshape the supply chains of offshore wind energy by taking all the stakeholders – suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, ports, farms, end-users, etc. into consideration. A smart design of supply chain network will aim to streamline costs and promote wider adoption of offshore wind energy.
We are seeking a PhD candidate interested in applying simulation software to design simulation-optimisation for resilient and sustainable supply chain network in offshore wind energy under uncertainty and disruption. We envision that this project will involve mathematical model developments and will utilise simulation, metaheuristics, and optimisation solver packages as solution procedures. We expect applicants to have a strong operational research background combined with proven interest in simulation and computer language.

Applicants for this studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science or technology. Prior knowledge and experience in the field of simulation modelling, computer programming, and nonlinear differential equations is desired.
If English is not your first language you will need to have achieved at least 6.0 in IELTS and no less than 6.0 in any section by the start of the project.
