Project Description

Smart wearable products have become a hot topic in research and industrial applications. However, the fundamental challenges are still remain as how to make the wearable products integrated into the natural fibre-textile structures to achieve the required performances in term of comfort, function, sensing, communicating, energy harvesting, energy storage and actualization. Smart functional wearable e-textiles have wide applications, huge market potential and profound impact in our lifestyle, wellbeing and healthcare, biomedical intervention, design, production and distribution of wearable products, supply chain management and e-business.

PhD students can select specific research topics in this area, depending on their own academic background and research interests. Novel strategies will be developed to: (1) study how to integrate advanced materials such as graphene and other nano materials into textile fibres to develop fiber-based electronic components for sensing, communicating, energy harvesting, energy storage and actualization; (2) Investigate the science and engineering principles for manufacturing such advanced smart fibre and/or textile materials; (3) Explore the system design and integration of the smart fibres and textile materials to achieve required functional performances; (4) Design and engineer wireless communication software and devices with data acquisition, data analysis, data transfer and data interpretation capabilities; (5) Conduct systematic research to evaluate the performances of smart wearable products and assess their impact on human health, wellbeing and our lifestyles, and explore the potential applications in healthcare, sports and other industries.

Funding Notes

Applicants should have or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree in one of the areas: physical science, electronic engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, material science, textile engineering, apparel design and engineering.

Funding covers tuition fees and annual maintenance payments of at least the Research Council minimum (currently £14,057) for eligible UK and EU applicants. EU nationals must have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the programme to be eligible for a full award (fees and stipend). Other EU nationals may be eligible for a fees-only award.
