Project Description

Coventry University (CU) is inviting applications from suitably-qualified graduates for a fully-funded PhD studentship.

This studentship is offered as part of the Coventry University (UK) – Deakin University (Australia) Cotutelle PhD programme.

Renewable energy micro-grids seem a perfect solution to provide off-grid, remote communities with energy for light, refrigeration, cooking, and other modern appliances. However, real-world experience of these micro-grids is that, too often, they fail and then fall into disrepair. Even where an energy supplier is directly involved in maintenance, systems can be so prone to failure that eventually end-users are driven to other solutions.

This program envisages future micro-grid systems that are easy to use, easy to manage and maintain, self-configuring, and, where possible, self-repairing. To do this, the applicant will make use of a diverse set of technologies and approaches, including: renewable systems (solar panels, wind generators), wireless embedded systems, machine learning.

The key research questions are around:
• Why do renewable energy micro-grids fail? What are the drivers for and against their longevity?
• What is the role for Internet of Things / wireless embedded systems in enabling configuration and management?
• What failure modes exist and can a machine learning approach help to identify and / or take action to resolve?

Training and Development

The successful candidate will receive comprehensive research training including technical, personal and professional skills.

All researchers at Coventry University (from PhD to Professor) are part of the Doctoral College and Centre for Research Capability and Development, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.
