To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering one full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary for candidates applying for the following project

Project summary
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains disproportionately affected by HIV epidemic, accounting for about 70 percent of the global burden, despite the region accounting for just 13 per cent of the global population. Although significant progress has been made in recent years due to increased access to HIV treatment, the number of people living with HIV has continued to grow as new infections exceed AIDS-related deaths. This calls for particular attention to the large numbers living with HIV, estimated at 26 million in SSA out of a global total of 37 million in 2014. There is considerable opportunity for improved understanding of the link between HIV/AIDS and a range of demographic, socio-economic and cultural factors at both micro and macro levels based on secondary analysis of existing data from the international Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) programme. The HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa has had damaging and long-lasting effects on individuals, families and communities in this region. It has reconfigured households, due to the high number of orphans, and altered the nature of family relationships, calling into question the place of long-standing cultural practices.

Applications for PhD studentships are invited from candidates who aim to understand the social and cultural complexities of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. We encourage applications from students proposing to undertake (1) quantitative or mixed methods research on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, involving secondary analysis of the DHS or other relevant data sets; or (2) qualitative, ethnographic research on the effects of HIV/AIDS on families, households, and traditional practices in this region. Suitable candidates would have an interest in international population health research.

This project is part of the ‘Health, Well-Being and Social Inclusion’ research group which views health and illness beyond a purely clinical perspective. Its mission is to explore the changing landscape of health, illness and medicine from a social science perspective. This is a long-standing strong and vibrant interdisciplinary research cluster in the School of Social Sciences which provides a strong research base within which the Studentship will be located.

In order to qualify for this scholarship you will require an undergraduate degree with at least a 2.1, or equivalent in a relevant subject.
Full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarships will include fees at the ‘home/EU' student rate and maintenance (£14,057 in 2015/16) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.

Full-time International Fee PhD Studentships will include full fees at the International student rate for three years, dependent on satisfactory progress.

PhD students at the University of Hull follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their research degree.

Successful applicants will be informed of the award as soon as possible and by 30th April 2016 at the latest.
