Management guidelines focus on the goal of improving quality of life of patients with inflammatory arthritis. Factors which are important in their quality of life will vary from patient to patient but there has been an increasing recognition of the importance of facilitating engagement in paid work for those who wish to do. There has been much less focus on the importance of social engagement, for example with family and friends. A research priority exercise which we conducted with patients identified enabling social engagement as a key aspect of successful management. We therefore propose a programme of work firstly to determine whether there exists an instrument suitable for the measurement of social (non-work) engagement for people with inflammatory arthritis. If not, the PhD will focus on developing and validating such an instrument. If there is (or an instrument suitable with minor modification) we will use this in one or more disease registers to quantify the issue of social engagement in patient groups alongside qualitative work to further understand the issues which such patient groups face and identifying unmet need.
