Sociology PhD: Empowering marginalised communities through the medium of physical activity.

Project Description

This PhD demonstratorship will support the work of the charity Mind, Body, Connect (MBC). MBC empowers marginalised populations through physical activity/exercise. Currently MBC works with recovering addicts, survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence as well as people with eating disorders. Their therapeutic exercise repertoire includes therapeutic yoga, strength based training and peer led exercise classes. MBC are looking to expand this repertoire based on the successful applicant’s own area of interest. We are currently undertaking mixed methods research with service users to document the benefits of these programmes. We are seeking a doctoral student who can contribute to this evidence base with a related topic of their choosing and put their weight into pushing MBC forward. Applicants should have innovative ideas regarding possible activities and recognise the importance of community in empowering marginalised individuals. The successful application will be conducive with MBC’s values of community empowerment and participant ownership of the recovery journey.

You are encouraged to contact Chris Fitzgerald ( or 0114 225 5698) for further information prior to applying. You can also consult the MBC webpage:
