Project Description

The urban environment in particular is an ever changing and challenging environment, with new subsurface infrastructure interacting with the existing. I am looking for potential researchers interested in projects involving numerical, laboratory and field studies in the area of subsurface infrastructure. This research would involve both geotechnical and structural components.
Example areas of research could include:

Pipelines – the effect of changing external conditions on pipeline stability, e.g. changing ground conditions due to climate change and leaks/voiding; installation techniques on long-term stability (e.g. trenchless versus open cut).

Tunnels – loading on tunnel linings due to different/changing ground conditions; interaction of tunnels between new and existing; tunnel connections, e.g. lining stresses in main tunnels and cross passages during construction.

Funding Notes

For suitably qualified candidates (good first degree), there is limited funding for UK/EU students, i.e. on a competitive basis.

If you are an overseas candidate then you can also apply for this competitive funding, but it will only cover the equivalent of 'home' fees and you would need to make up the difference.

Self-funded applicants can also apply for this research.
