About the Project

The PhD research activity is related to the development of solar cells for space and smart applications. Power is critical for space missions and Internet of Things (IoT) networks. The project aims to fabricate and characterise organic/halide perovskite photovoltaic (PV) and betavoltaic (BV) devices for their massive potential in powering low energy consumption smart devices and off-Earth energy systems.

The PhD research activity is related to the development and characterisation of emerging solar cells for space and smart applications.

Power is critical for space missions and Internet of Things (IoT) networks. The project aims to fabricate and characterise organic/halide perovskite photovoltaic (PV) and betavoltaic (BV) devices for their massive potential in powering low energy consumption smart devices and off-Earth energy systems.

The research includes:

  • Development of novel semiconductor materials that have greater energy -conversion and increased radiation resistance
  • Designing PV and BV energy harvesting devices and integrated IoT solutions
  • Enhancing PV efficiency under the different light conditions
  • Researching radiation tolerance of BV devices
  • Nanoscale characterisation of materials and devices using scanning probe microscopy

This studentship is open to UK students starting in January 2023, or later start dates can be considered.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a minimum of the following qualification, a First-Class Honours or upper Second-Class Honours or MSc degree or MEng in the physical sciences or engineering.

English language requirements: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in Writing, or equivalent

Funding Notes

Each PhD studentship is fully-funded, including fees and a tax-free stipend, at UKRI studentship rates covered for the duration of 3.5 years for UK candidates. Funded by the Advanced Technology Institute at the University of Surrey.
