Project Description

Solids, such as coal, grain, or ore are the primary input to most of our process industries; however, handling solids is exceedingly difficult due to the complex fluid/solid behaviour they exhibit: for example, sand may be poured, like a fluid, to fill a container but it is impossible to stir it.

Many solids handling processes rely maintaining a “fluid-like” state by injecting a gas or liquid during processing (e.g., pneumatic conveyance or fluidised beds). It is critical that this interaction between fluid and solid can be understood and modelled to optimise these processes.

This project will explore a new simulation technique of coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulation to study Solid-Fluid systems. A new class of DEM models has been developed by the group in Aberdeen, which can be coupled with mesh-free IDSMC methods for the gas phase and promises to revolutionise our understanding of these systems. During the project, the model will be developed and immediately applied to the optimisation of jet mills, cement kilns, and sand screens used in the Oil & Gas industry.

The project will provide training in IDSMC and DEM simulations, as well as general knowledge in high-performance computing and numerical methods.

The successful candidate should have, or expect to have an Honours Degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Engineering, Physics, Computational Science with knowledge of Programming, algorithms, fundamental physics.
