Spatiotemporal Workflows and Resilient Management Laboratory (SWARM Lab)

Project Description

Two Ph.D. research assistant positions are available within the Spatiotemporal Workflows and Resilient Management Laboratory (SWARM Lab) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to work in the general domain of Data Science, Systems Engineering, and Computational Models for Construction Automation and Civil Infrastructure Systems. The student’s research advisor will be Dr. Pingbo Tang.

The work will be interdisciplinary by nature, possibly spanning over civil and construction engineering, data analytics for construction project control, infrastructure management, computational intelligence, and spatiotemporal analysis and information management (e.g., GIS, Building Information Modeling).

The primary research projects are:
1) Risk Monitoring of Civil Infrastructures Using Correlated Change Patterns in Spatiotemporal Data;
2) Dynamic Human-Technology Reliability for Civil Infrastructure Operations;
3) Automatic Imagery Data Analysis for Proactive Computer-Based Workflow Management during Nuclear Power Plant Outages;
4) Human-Centered Automation and Multi-media Data Fusion for Resilient Air Traffic Control and Aviation Systems Safety; and
5) Remote Sensing and Spatiotemporal Modeling for Predictive Water Infrastructure Operation Analysis.


B.S. in Civil Engineering, or Construction Engineering and Management, or Remote Sensing and Geospatial Technologies, or Computer Science and Robotics, or other related fields.

Interests and experiences related to two or more of the following academic areas:

1) Mathematical modeling, simulation, and statistical analysis;
2) Computing (programming, automation, artificial intelligence);
3) Image processing and computer vision;
4) Statistics and mathematical modeling (machine learning);
5) Automation in construction and robotics;
7) Computer-Aided Design and computer graphics;
8) Database and information management;
9) GIS and spatial analysis.

Funding Notes

ASSISTANTSHIP PACKAGE: Competitive stipend, full tuition waiver. Room & board expenses will be covered for research travels (conferences, data collections).
