About the Project

A fully

funded 3.5-year PhD studentship is available to a start in September 2024 within the research group of Prof. Jonathan W. Steed (https://www.durham.ac.uk/staff/jon-steed/)at Durham University (Chemistry Department). 

This project is directed towards the preparation of entirely new energetic materials based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of a non-toxic, Earth-abundant metal, specifically iron(II). Metal-organic framework based energetic materials are currently very topical because their rigid, extended 2D or 3D structure seems to correlate with high stability, good mechanical hardness and lower sensitivity. Iron complexes have spin crossover switching such that their sensitivity can be switched by thermal activation or irradiation. Such functional materials can be regarded as clean ‘smart explosives’. The project is in collaboration with The Falcon Project and the student will have the opportunity to visiting their labs and testing facilities. Throughout the project there will be the opportunity to write research papers and attend academic conferences.
