Project Description

The Astrophysics Group at the University of Leeds investigates star and planet formation using cutting edge observational and computing facilities. We lead international teams in conducting and exploiting infrared and radio surveys, and perform focused follow-up observations of individual sources utilising state-of-the-art spectroscopic, interferometric and spectropolarimetric techniques.
On the theoretical side we construct multidimensional, multifluid hydromagnetic models of the births of Giant Molecular Clouds and the development and evolution of structure within them.
We also perform fundamental studies of physical processes important in many diffuse astrophysical sources including investigations of how cosmic rays affect dynamics, the effects of charged nanoparticles on magnetic field evolution and the formation and escape of molecules from the surfaces of nanoparticles.

The Astrophysics Group is seeking to expand its research to include proto-planetary discs and planetary atmospheres.
In the first instance we are interested in students wishing to work in the area of astrochemistry applied to these sources. However, consideration will also be given to exceptional candidates wishing to work on other aspects of star and planet formation which are aligned with the groups interests.
