Structural Evolution in Energy Materials Manufactured by Particle Aerosol Deposition

Project Description

Particle aerosol deposition (AD) is an innovative thick-film manufacturing route that allows dense ceramic coatings to be produced at room-temperature. Ceramic particles of an appropriate size distribution when accelerated to near supersonic velocities undergo plastic deformation and consolidation on impact with a substrate.

The avoidance of high temperature processing offers to revolutionise the manufacture of functional and structural ceramics for a range of energy-related applications. Distinctive nanostructured materials are produced, but little is known of the mechanisms leading to consolidation or how the nanostructures may be controlled to optimise product performance.

Long and short range structural features will be determined during and after particle-substrate collisions. By understanding the factors that control structure (grain size, crystal lattice defects and interfacial phenomena) through a combination of structural analysis techniques it will be possible to tailor process conditions to engineer structures with enhanced functional performance for energy conversion applications.

Funding Notes

Funding covers the cost of fees at £4,327 and provides a maintenance of £15,009 for the 2019/20 academic year. Funding duration is 3.5 years. UK applicants will be eligible for a full award paying tuition fees and maintenance. European Union applicants will be eligible for an award paying tuition fees only, except in exceptional circumstances, or where residency has been established for more than 3 years prior to the start of the course.
