Applications are invited for ONE full time PhD scholarship funded by Brunel University London. The studentship is for a period of 3 years, starting March 1st 2021 or at a mutually agreed time after that.
The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend of £17285, plus payment of their full-time home/EU tuition fees. Applicants must be eligible for home/EU tuition fees.
Project Details
The project is in an exciting field at the forefront of research in flow boiling in small and microchannles and involves advanced fundamental experimental research. The successful candidate will be based at Brunel University London, but will be part of a team working with academics and researchers at Imperial College London, the University of Nottingham and industrial partners.
The research carried out by the successful applicant will start with the setting up of an experimental facility followed by a systematic study of flow boiling in single and multi-microchannels. The project will include an assessment of the effect of geometry (aspect ratio) and surface characteristics on flow boiling patterns, heat transfer mechanism(s) and heat transfer rates as well as pressure drop in single passages. The research will then be extended to multichannel heat exchangers. Novel manufacturing methods, i.e. (i) additive manufacturing and (ii) embossing technology will be employed to manufacture the test sections and their performance will be compared under similar experimental conditions. Coated microchannels will also be studied. Experiments performed by our partners could be used to agree and possibly extent the range of diameter and aspect ratio studied. The candidate may also be involved in collating data on flow boiling from the project partners.

Eligibility
Applicants will have or expect to receive a first degree at 2:1 or above in an Engineering or Physical Sciences related discipline. A Masters degree is an advantage but not essential. Applicants with a Mechanical and Chemical Engineering background having taken relevant courses in thermofluids are strongly encouraged to apply.
