Superconducting diamond as a bridge to the quantum mechanical world

Project Description

We investigate the quantum properties of devices made from superconducting diamond. Diamond has obvious industrial uses because of its inherent hardness, but we are interested in exploiting its properties when it is doped with Boron. A semiconductor is turned into a superconductor. We can exploit the hardness of the superconducting material to make bridge resonators that should enter the quantum ground state simply by cooling them. This project will continue our groups work to explore the fundamental modes of Nano Electro-Mechanical (NEMS) bridges made out of diamond and methods of detection using quantum circuitry. The work will be performed in the temperature range from 10 mk - 10 K, with the hope of understanding dissipation mechanisms in the quantum limit.

In this project you will investigate a range of detection methods using SQUIDS and NEMS to understand the system as its cooled using dilution fridges and cryostats to probe the frequency response of the system and then model the results based on the latest understanding in our field. You will develop a range of skills covering experimental physics, modelling, project planning with opportunities to write papers and present work at international conferences.

The start date for the project will be 1st October 2019.

Funding Notes

You should have obtained, or be about to obtain a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree in Physics , or a related subject, Alternatively, applicants with equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK will also be considered. Applicants with a Lower Second Class degree will be considered if they also have a Master’s degree.
Applicants whose first language is not English are normally expected to meet the minimum University requirements (e.g. 6.5 IELTS)
