About the Project

We are looking for a curiosity-driven student to tackle a key challenge for zero

emission aviation using advanced material science. The PhD project will be part

of a five-year project (Superconducting machines for zero emission aviation).

The project will focus on exploring the unique physics features of high

temperature superconductor in developing high power density propulsion

machines. This is a multi-disciplinary research, covering applied physics and

electrical machine engineering. The PhD student is expected to use a combined

experimental and numerical methods. The student will have access to all

essential experimental and simulation tools and platforms to support the

research. The student will be a member of the large Applied Superconductivity

Laboratory team (https://www.cryogenicpropulsion.com/), which features an

inclusive environment with a good culture diversity.

The student will be based on the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, which ranked top five in the UK and top 100 around the world.

The candidate is expected to have a first-class master level degree in relevant subject which includes but are not limited to Electrical/Mechanical Engineering and superconductivity. Applicant with previous research experience and publication record in electrical machines or applied superconductivity are particularly welcome. The candidate is expected to provide three independent references. The studentship opens for UK/EU and International students. It covers tuition fees and offers a £16000 annual stipend for three-years with a starting date of 1st Oct 2023.
