About the Project

We have interests in host-guest chemistry, photocatalysis and flow chemistry, and recently embarked on the development of new systems that display impressive enhancements in catalyst performance when host cavities are presented to an appropriate substrate. The proposed project will expand on this proof of principle, focussing on selective host-guest catalysis, chirality (which may be achieved through introduction of appropriate groups to the host), and the influence that different intermolecular interactions may have on guest binding (and subsequent rates of catalysis). The work will also involve the synthesis of designed host platforms with targeted photosensitizing capability (through the application of computational chemistry), but also the incorporating of these species in polymeric materials which may then be used in a range of industrially relevant applications, e.g. supramolecular photocatalysis in flow.

The work is interdisciplinary and will involve synthetic chemistry, analysis using a range of techniques (NMR, MS, XRD, IR, UV-vis etc), synthesis of functionalised materials, and flow chemistry. This activity will be supported through a range of training opportunities (e.g. summer schools and specialised courses) that are relevant to the techniques being employed, significantly enhancing the PGR experience as a result. HWU also has excellent training courses for PGRs (run by the Research Futures Academy) that enhance transferrable skills and include topics such as applying for funding.

Funding Notes

There are a number of scholarships available which offer funding from between 3 and 3.5 years at an average stipend rate of £15,000 per year.
