About This PhD Project

Project Description

The researcher will work with CREST, Panacea, Innospec and North Lincs Engineering to identify, and apply whole life cycle solutions to PM2020 as a disruptive technology. PM2020 is a front-end engine technology, for diesel/bio-diesel engines. It enhances air intake, which improves fuel burn, and reduces fuel consumption by >5% and particulate matter (PM) by 35- 65%.

The aim is to develop and apply future fuel blends to this technology to reduce these parameters further. The researcher will re-configure PM2020 for the maritime environment, and road-test against a variety of fuel blends, to demonstrate real-world applicability (TRL7). Here, CREST and Panacea will collaborate with Innospec a global £1.5bn specialty fuel company, providing expertise on shipping fuels; both existing and future neutral blends.

The research outputs will be disseminated to relevant institutions to inform MARPOL and help support the government to deliver on the priorities set out in the Clean Maritime Plan and/or Maritime Strategy 2050 Zero Emission Shipping sub-theme.
