Sustainable mountain soils in the face of change; impact of land-use and climate extremes

Project Description

Do you want to help shape the future of our mountainous environments? Are you passionate about how our mountains can contribute to food production, safeguard water supply, and mitigate climate change? Do you want to do this whilst gaining cutting-edge skills? If so, this PhD is for you.

The project will be focussed on fieldwork in the Haweswater catchment in the NE lake district, with project partners United Utilities and the RSPB, taking advantage of a unique land-use and climate-change experiment. Further, you will have the opportunity to work alongside Natural England colleagues on how your work will feed through to new policy on upland management. You will gain laboratory and field skills in ecology and biogeochemistry, and work on cutting-edge analytical equipment with York and Centre for Ecology and Hydrology team members. The project will ask how management and land-use change can affect biodiversity and key ecosystem processes of water and carbon cycling in upland environments. You will have a background in natural sciences (e.g. geography, biology, environmental science), been keen to work outside, and have a passion for developing questions and working in an exciting team. Funding Notes

This NERC ACCE DTP studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years in the first instance, and students must complete their PhD in four years. The studentship covers: (i) a tax-free annual stipend at the standard Research Council rate (£15,009 for 2019-2020, but typically increases annually in line with inflation), (ii) research costs, and (iii) tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. You can extend your funding period for up to 3 months by applying for an industrial placement.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Students with, or expecting to gain, at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree, or equivalent, are invited to apply. The interdisciplinary nature of this programme means that we welcome applications from students with backgrounds in any relevant subject that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and experience for the DTP, including environmental, biological, chemical, mathematical, physical and social sciences.
