About the Project

The field of chemical synthesis is under constant pressure to produce molecules in a timely, economical and sustainable fashion. This project will involves subjecting bio-based platforms (derived from chitin) to heterocyclisation and heteroannulation reactions using both electrochemistry and mechanochemistry, to form nitrogen heterocycles relevant to the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries. These synthetic procedures generate a negligible waste-stream, thus providing a valuable contribution to the fledgling field of sustainable chemical synthesis. It is anticipated the new methods developed during the course of this project will lead to a paradigm shift in bio-based fine chemical production


Funding Notes

Scholarship funding up to NZ$27,500 per annum for three years. Tuition fees are also paid (3 years)
